Competitive Swimming has been a staple of every Olympic Games of the modern era. Swimmers compete in a 50m pool in Freestyle events, plus a medley involving all four strokes. With distances varying from 50m to 1500m, endurance and speed are essential qualities for Olympic Swimmers. Olympic Artistic Swimming and Olympic Marathon Swimming are also set to take place in Paris.
Team USA has been historically dominant in Men’s Swimming. Michael Phelps holds the most medals of any Olympian with 28, including 23 gold medals, in swimming events. American swimmer Caeleb Dressel has already earned seven gold medals in two Olympic appearances, competing in freestyle, butterfly, and relay events.
Women’s Swimming joined the Olympic program in 1912 with two events, but now features the same lineup of events as the men’s competition. American Jenny Thompson holds the all-time gold medal record by a U.S. woman with eight, but Katie Ledecky, with seven gold medals out of ten total, could break that record in Paris.
Swimming
After winning five gold medals in Tokyo, Caeleb Dressel is out to defend his championships in 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly. He mostly competes in freestyle and butterfly.

A four-time Olympic gold medalist, Murphy has been named one of four captains on the U.S. Olympic swim team in Paris. He competes in the 100m and 200m backstroke events.
Swimming
One of the most decorated female swimmers of all time, Katie Ledecky won her first gold medal in 2012 in the 800m freestyle. She has since earned six more gold medals and has won four individual distance events from 200m to 1500m.
Swimming
Team USA backstroke and butterfly star Regan Smith made her Olympic debut in Tokyo. There, she won medals in the 200m butterfly (silver), 100m backstroke (bronze) and 4x100m medley relay (bronze).
