What is the Big Ten?

The Big Ten Conference, founded in 1896, is the oldest college athletic conference in the NCAA. It comprises some of the biggest schools in college sports: Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland, Michigan State, Indiana, Rutgers, Purdue, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Northwestern, as well as Notre Dame’s men’s ice hockey and Johns Hopkins’ men’s lacrosse teams. In the 2024–2025 school year, UCLA and USC will also join the Big Ten.

These schools are split into two divisions—East and West—with the top teams from each division playing against each other in the conference championship. In the East, there’s Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland, Michigan State, Indiana, and Rutgers; in the West, there’s Purdue, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Northwestern.
