How do I make a Mint Julep?

Our coworker Timothy, Peacock’s resident cocktail expert, offers this recipe for those of you of legal drinking age: You'll need: 5–10 fresh mint leaves, 2 ounces (¼ cup) bourbon, ½ ounce (1 tablespoon) mint simple syrup (recipe follows), Crushed ice, 2–3 mint sprigs to garnish. Flavored simple syrup: 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup fresh mint leaves, or ½ cup of fresh mint + ½ cup of fresh basil + 1 inch piece of ginger, thinly sliced and peeled. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring until all the sugar dissolves. Lower heat and let simmer for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let the mixture steep for 25–30 minutes. Strain and refrigerate. Makes 1 ½ cups simple syrup. Direction: Fold each mint leaf in half and give it a good pinch. Add it to a highball glass, along with the bourbon and ½ ounce mint simple syrup. Fill the glass halfway with crushed ice. Using a bar spoon or stirring stick, mix ingredients together and lightly muddle the mint. Mix until the crushed ice starts to melt, approximately 1 minute Top with additional crushed ice to form a mound on top of the cocktail. Garnish with 2–3 fresh mint sprigs and enjoy responsibly.

Preakness is the second leg of the Triple Crown, typically held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby. The 1.9-kilometer race (the shortest dash in the Triple Crown) takes place at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.Instead of roses, the race is known as "The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans," repping the state flower of Maryland. Unfortunately, black-eyed Susans are not in season in May, so the winner’s garland is actually made up of similar-looking Viking mums.
