- The first three Fast movies introduce core characters and establish the street‑racing roots that shaped the series’ long-term appeal.
- The timeline is nonlinear, with later films revealing that parts 4–6 occur before Tokyo Drift, reshaping the chronological viewing order.
When Dominic Toretto, Brian O'Conner, and Letty Ortiz drove their cars under semi-trucks in The Fast and the Furious, they also sped into fans' hearts.
That first film, which has spawned nine sequels (and counting!) plus a spinoff, was released on June 22, 2001. Which, per canon, means the ever-sprawling franchise is now older than Brian was in The Fast and The Furious. In addition to the movies, there's a Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift Ride roller coaster at Universal Studios Hollywood as of summer 2026, following the Fast & Furious: Supercharged Studio Tour attraction that debuted in 2015. And, as Vin Diesel revealed in May, a series is in development at Peacock.

But before Toretto and his crew tussled with villains played by the likes of Charlize Theron and Jason Momoa, before they raced around the globe and even briefly went to space, the series built its passionate following with inventive, pulse-racing chase sequences and great storytelling. Which is why they're so fun to watch again and again.
The first three Fast and Furious movies introduce the principal players in the series' expanding universe, portrayed by Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriquez, Tyrese, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, and Sung Kang. Find out where to stream them below, and learn more about the order — and the actual chronological order — of the Fast series. Hop into your 10-second car and let's go!

The Fast and the Furious
Release date: June 22, 2001
Directed by Rob Cohen, The Fast and The Furious introduces us to Los Angeles street racer Dom Toretto (Diesel), his love and actual partner-in-crime Letty (Rodriguez), his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), and Brian O'Conner (Walker), an undercover cop with a wild streak. O'Conner's job is to bust Toretto's ring of racer thieves, but things get complicated faster than a NOS-boosted car.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
Release date: June 15, 2006
In the franchise's first internationally-set adventure, a high school street racer (Lucas Black) moves to Tokyo and is thrown into the local drifting scene ("drifting" is when a racer oversteers to move their car in a controlled slide). He makes two friends along the way, Twinkie (Shad Moss) and Han (Sung Kang), a man grieving his girlfriend (this plot point becomes pivotal later!). Tokyo Drift also brings Diesel's Toretto back into the franchise where he belongs.

What is the chronological order of the Fast and Furious movies?
A mid-credits scene at the end of Fast & Furious 6 shakes up everything we thought we knew about the order of events in the series. Though Han (Kang) was killed by a car at the end of Tokyo Drift, we now see that a man named Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) was behind the wheel. This introduces Statham to the series, and retroactively frames Han's death as an act of revenge for the events occurring in the sixth film.
This reworked story order means that Gisele (Gal Gadot) was the slain girlfriend Han mourned in Tokyo Drift — thus establishing that the fourth, fifth, and sixth movies released were actually prequels to Tokyo Drift. Now you really need to stream Tokyo Drift on Peacock with all of that in mind.
