For fans of happily ever afters with an animated twist, you've come to the right place. The world of Shrek is filled with grumpy ogres, wise-cracking donkeys, leading green ladies, and fantastical fairytale creatures. Whether you're a lifelong fan or new to the Kingdom of Far Far Away, Peacock is the destination to dive into these animated adventure films. Let’s get it, don-keh!

Who are the main Shrek characters?

There are many colorful fairytale characters across the Shrek universe, but here are six that you should know:

Shrek (voiced by Mike Meyers) is a grumpy ogre who once lived in a swamp until he met Donkey and saved Princess Fiona, bringing friendship and love into his life. Since marrying Fiona, Shrek has grown into a dedicated husband and father, though he sometimes wishes for his former bachelor life.

Wise-cracking equine Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy) befriended an initially reluctant Shrek but has become his best confidante. Donkey finds true love with Dragon and starts his own family.

Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz) is a princess with a secret, one that she finally revealed to Shrek — she’s an ogre too. Accepting her true form, Fiona marries Shrek, becomes a leader of an underground resistance, and is a mom to triplets (which may be the hardest job of all).

Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas) is hired to eliminate Shrek in Shrek 2 but soon switches sides and becomes one of the green ogre’s besties. The character is so charismatic and beloved that he’s at the center of two spin-off films, Puss in Boots (2011) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), the latter of which will be available to stream Sept 10.

The Gingerbread Man (voiced by Conrad Vernon), who’s also known as Gingy, is one of Shrek’s tastiest pals. While he’s usually carefree, the Gingerbread Man always seems to be crumbling under the pressure of maintaining the facade of being a delicious cookie.

With a nose that grows, it’s hard for Pinocchio (voiced by Cody Cameron) to tell a lie. But one thing is true: He’s a loyal friend to Shrek and joins him on his many adventures. The character has appeared in all four films.

How many Shrek movies are there?

There are four Shrek movies in the franchise: Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010).
