By CK Dolan
The Funniest Scary Movies to Stream This Halloween

It’s that time of year again! Leaves are dying. Nights are getting longer and darker. The veil that separates the living from the dead is beginning to wear thin. If you’re searching for laughs during this sinister season, look no further — here are 13 hilarious horror comedy movies streaming on Peacock this Halloween.

1. Cheap Thrills (2014)

Freshly unemployed and facing an eviction notice, a new father enjoys a night of debauchery that turns ugly as a mysterious couple dares him to do things for increasing sums of money. This is a dark comedy, so it’s not “funny haha,” but funny in a perverse and ironic way. Enjoy!

2. Death Becomes Her (1992)

Two queens of the silver screen unite in this beloved cult classic: Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep play frenemies fighting over the same man, played by Bruce Willis, and a potion that grants eternal youth. It’s a whip-smart satire of Hollywood’s unrealistic beauty standards and the lengths folks will go to preserve their corporeal beauty.

3. Deathgasm (2016)

Poking fun at the Satanic panic of the 1980s, which postulated that pop culture like heavy metal music could corrupt the minds of unassuming teens, Deathgasm imagines what it’d look like if that actually happened. Picture metalheads possessed by demons. As protagonist Brodie says, “My friends are losers, so we started a band.” Party on!

4. Ghostbusters (1984)

This iconic film needs no introduction. Ghostbusters follows three parapsychology professors as they hunt, capture, and contain ghosts around New York City with ghost vacuums. Fun fact: Dan Aykroyd (who wrote and stars in the film) is a fourth-generation Spiritualist and fervently believes in many paranormal phenomena. Who you gonna call? Maybe Dan Aykroyd!

5. Death Day 2U (2019)

Happy Death Day 2U is one of the few sequels that is better than the original film. Protagonist Tree is once again caught in a time loop that causes her to be murdered many times over, but now she has a choice about which reality she returns to once the loop is broken. It’s a very goofy slasher that seamlessly blends elements like quantum physics and a serial killer in a baby mask.

6. Krampus (2015)

Based on the mythical spirit from European folklore, Krampus tells the story of Santa’s evil foil. Unlike Saint Nick, Krampus does not come to town bearing gifts — he comes to punish those who were left off the nice list. In this film, the horned demon terrorizes a family that’s lost power on Christmas Eve during a massive snowstorm.

7. The Love Witch (2016)

In this wry satire of the femme fatale trope, Elaine is a young witch who uses “love magic” to lure men into her deadly web. It’s aesthetically flawless, made to look like a 1960s Technicolor film with the northern California coast as its backdrop and gemlike hues inspired by the Thoth tarot deck. The humor is subtle here, but so satisfying when Elaine drops bits of wisdom like “According to experts, men are very fragile” with a mischievous glint in her eye.

8. The People Under the Stairs (1991)

In this grimly funny Wes Craven number, the monsters are landlords named Mommy and Daddy whose basement is filled with cannibalistic children. The People Under the Stairs draws inspiration from the anguish of late-stage capitalism and the resultant wealth hoarding that broadens social inequities.

9. Renfield (2023)

In the latest spin on the classic saga, Renfield enters a self-help group for people in codependent relationships as he attempts to extract himself from his job as Dracula’s familiar. Nicolas Cage plays the infamous bloodsucker with ghoulish aplomb as he demands Renfield bring him “a handful of nuns” or perhaps “a busload of cheerleaders.”

10. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

A parody of classic zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead, Shaun of the Dead centers on a directionless twentysomething who wakes up to find London in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. He must cross the city to save his mom and girlfriend, and in the process invokes countless silly horror tropes.

11. Slither (2006)

When a meteor crashes into a small town in South Carolina, an alien parasite that hitched a ride to Earth begins infecting residents with its slug-like larvae. The townspeople must fight off the extraterrestrial attacker before it’s too late, and they do so to great comedic effect.

12. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2011)

In a smart takedown of a worn-out horror trope — that hillbillies in the woods are waiting to kidnap unsuspecting youths — Tucker & Dale vs. Evil centers those hillbillies as the protagonists and heroes. Watching Tucker and Dale become increasingly befuddled as to why a group of college kids is afraid of them is truly hilarious.

13. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood & Honey (2023)

Blood stains the Hundred Acre Wood in this gory reimaging of Winnie-the-Pooh. After leaving his anthropomorphic animal friends to attend college, Christopher Robin returns with his girlfriend to find they’ve all gone feral. Cue Pooh and Piglet’s rampage of terror, which is way funnier than it probably should be.
