What is Cloverfield about?

Cloverfield tells the story of a group of young New Yorkers whose going-away party for a friend gets derailed as a nightmarish, skyscraper-sized monster wrecks havoc on the city. The group utilizes a a handheld camcorder to record their harrowing ordeal as they try to survive the destruction caused by the monster.

The vast majority of Cloverfield plays out in "found-footage" style, meaning the narrative is explained through the lens of a video camera that survived all of the chaotic destruction. The result is a harrowing first-person experience that helped define a new genre of filmmaking.

Who is in the Cloverfield cast?

Cloverfield boasts an ensemble cast that includes Michael Stahl-David, Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller, Odette Annable, Mike Vogel, Ben Feldman, and Theo Rossi.

In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes ahead of the film's original theatrical release, Stahl-David spoke about the film's wild premise.

"I think in some ways it's as much a survival movie as it is about the monster. The monster is definitely the problem, but you're seeing it the way we would, we don't pan back and watch it perfectly. It is going to be exciting," he explained. "It is contemporary film vocabulary — this kind of first-hand account, something that could've been on YouTube or something. Someone just holds up the camera and starts filming, there are probably other accounts, [our footage is] just the one the government happens to find."

The film is directed by Matt Reeves (The Batman), produced by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek) and Bryan Burk (Super 8), and written by Drew Goddard (Project Hail Mary).
