Hockey

Notre Dame Hockey

It’s college hockey season! That means a return to the Compton Family Ice Arena for the Notre Dame hockey team. The home games couldn’t come soon enough. After two losses in the Icebreaker Tournament, the Irish are starting the season two games down. Their home opener gives them two chances to get right as they take on St. Lawrence in front of the home crowd. The Saints are 1–3–0 after starting the season with three straight losses. They are coming off a 5–2 win over Vermont though, so they could give the Irish a fight. This is a good opportunity for Notre Dame to get back to .500 early in the season with some tough games ahead.

Friday Oct 17 at 7p ET: St. Lawrence vs. Notre Dame

World Aquatics Swimming World Cup

The World Aquatics Swimming World Cup continues its tour through North America with another U.S. stop. This weekend, the fastest swimmers in the world head to Westmont, IL for the second event of the season. Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, and Regan Smith are back in action this weekend, and will be joined by Katie Grimes in her first World Cup race of the season.

Figure Skating

Grand Prix de France

The Winter Olympics are coming up fast, so elite figure skaters everywhere will be giving it a little extra this season. Going into the Winter Games with a few Grand Prix wins under their belt would be a huge boost of confidence in Milan-Cortina. The season kicks off in France, where USA star Ilia Malinin will try to take down defending champion, and French favorite, Adam Siao Him Fa. U.S. Skaters Maxim Naumov and Andrew Torgashev will also take the ice, competing for one of three available U.S. men’s singles spots in the upcoming Games. On the women’s side, Isabeau Levito hopes to start a run of success here after an injury sidelined her for much of last season. That makes last year’s Grand Prix de France her only Grand Prix win. Look for her to pick up a few more starting this weekend.

Soccer

Gainbridge Super League

Spokane Zephyr FC is now on top of the Gainbridge Super League after a big win over Dallas Trinity FC, now in fourth place. That win, plus a Fort Lauderdale United draw was enough to power the small eastern Washington town to the top of the league. Meanwhile, Brooklyn FC and Carolina Ascent FC both have seven points each before they face off in Coney Island. A win could propel either team to the top four if everything else goes their way. Standing in the way of that happening is Sporting JAX, who faces last-place Tampa Bay Sun this weekend. Sporting JAX has had a respectable run of form in recent weeks, and could crack the top four with a win on Saturday.

Thursday Oct 16 at 6:30p ET: Lexington SC vs. Fort Lauderdale United FC

Saturday Oct 18 at 6p ET: Brooklyn FC vs. Carolina Ascent FC

Saturday Oct 18 at 7:30p ET: Sporting JAX vs. Tampa Bay Sun FC

Sunday Oct 19 at 2p ET: DC Power FC vs. Spokane Zephyr FC

Liga MX

Two nights, three big Apertura matches in Liga MX. It all starts with Tigres UANL, who has a chance to jump a few places. A win over Atlas last week put them three points clear of sixth place and with a match against 17th-place Necaxa, it’s very possible we could see them jump as high as third if everything goes their way. Saturday starts with a tense battle between Juárez and Pachuca, both seventh and eighth on the table respectively. A win here could put either team into the top six, so expect this one to get heated. Finally, cap off a Saturday of soccer in Guadalajara, where Chivas takes on Mazatlán. After a three-game winning streak, Chivas is comfortably in the top ten, though they’d like the insurance of a few more points before the Apertura ends. They’ll face a Mazatlán side that finds itself in thirteenth place, but could be on the verge of a comeback. If they can handle that notorious Estadio Akron crowd.

Premier League

Liverpool took their second straight loss two weeks ago, putting Arsenal one point ahead in first place. The Gunners hope to extend that lead this weekend when they face 14th-place Fulham on the road. Not that it’s a long road trip for Arsenal. This is a London Derby. The Cottagers have lost their last two, so they’ll be playing to bounce back at home. Elsewhere in the league, Man City find themselves one point outside of the top four. Breaking in will require them to beat Everton who are dangerous despite their lower position on the table. The Toffees have made things difficult for a few big clubs this season, so Man City will have to be at the top of their game here, even with the Etihad crowd behind them. This might be City’s best chance to move past fourth-place Bournemouth. The Cherries have been on a tear since the start of the season, but they’re on the road against Crystal Palace this weekend. Palace is the entire reason Liverpool fell out of first place. They’re a giant killer this year (and possibly giant themselves), and a real threat to any team that comes to Selhurst Park.

Motorsports

IMSA

As long as there’s still racing to be done, IMSA will send its cutting-edge sports cars out on the country’s most iconic tracks. This weekend, the world’s greatest Porsche drivers take to the Circuit of the Americas for two more races of the Porsche Carrera Cup. This is one of the premier tracks in the United States with its rolling, hilly layout and demanding turns. You can’t ask for a better showcase of the coolest Carreras around.

Sunday Oct 19 at 11a ET: Porsche Carrera Cup – Race 2

NASCAR

The NASCAR Playoffs reach the second race of the Round of 8. With two chances left to claim a spot in the Championship Four, it’s time to go all out on the track now. This week’s race brings the world’s fastest stock car drivers to the legendary Talladega Superspeedway. 500 miles fly by on this tri-oval, which is the largest oval track in NASCAR. Drafting is vital to winning on this track, so drivers will have to pick their moments to pass wisely or risk getting left behind for the rest of the race. Talladega is all about strategy, which makes it the perfect stage for a playoff race.

Speed Skating

Short Track World Tour

Speed Skating season continues with another week of strategy, speed, and adrenaline. The Short Track World Tour is sticking around Montreal for the second week of the season. The Korean White Tigers ended last week’s opener with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the women’s 3,000m relay. South Korea also took the Men’s 1,500m final with a win by Rim Jongun. Canada also took two medals last weekend with William Dandjinou winning the men’s 500m and Courtney Sarault winning the women’s 100m. The Ice Maples hope to add to that total with another home match this weekend.

Football

Big Ten Football

No. 3 Indiana has become one of the scariest teams in college football. They rose high in the AP Top 25 thanks to big victories over then-ranked Illinois and now No. 8 Oregon. If you have a perfect record in the Big Ten, watch out. The Hoosiers are coming for you. This week, they hope to stay undefeated when they host Michigan State. The Spartans haven’t won a game since conference play began, but this is still an important one for Indiana. If they want to stay high in the rankings, they’ll need to keep winning and win big, since at the moment, they have no ranked opponents on the schedule. Stick around at night for Penn State vs. Iowa. It’s been a rough few weeks for the Nittany Lions. A loss to Oregon dropped them far down the AP Top 25 and a loss against then-winless UCLA knocked them out completely. Things got even worse with a loss to Northwestern. With head coach James Franklin now gone, Penn State is hoping to salvage what’s left of their season on the road against Iowa. Even these losses have been filled with drama, so no matter how this game turns out, we’re expecting a fun one on Saturday night.

Notre Dame Football

The No. 13 Fighting Irish just keep working their way up the AP Top 25. Now, they face possibly the biggest challenge left on their schedule. No. 20 USC experienced a setback earlier this season when they narrowly lost to Illinois and fell out of the rankings. Then a 31–13 rout of Michigan brought the Trojans back up. That’s potentially good news for Notre Dame as a win against a ranked team will do great things for their playoff chances. After losing their first two games of the season, the Irish need to win out and win big to see postseason action. The Trojans won’t make it easy, though. USC is still feeling that loss to Illinois, and they’re not going to let another team knock them back out of the Top 25 without a fight.

NFL

Sunday Night Football takes us to Santa Clara, CA to see the San Francisco 49ers host the Atlanta Falcons. This has turned into one of the most exciting matchups on the schedule. The 49ers are on top of the NFC West, but just barely. They’re 4–2 on the season, but so are the Seahawks and the Rams. Now, they’re about to host a team that’s been tearing through the NFL lately. The Falcons are coming off two big wins over the Commanders and Bills. Those didn’t look like flukes either. Atlanta is a real threat and they’ll be looking to take down another top team on Sunday Night.

Basketball

NBA

It’s here. The NBA returns to NBC this coming Tuesday and for the first time ever, regular season NBA games are streaming LIVE on Peacock. What better way to start off a new era than with a showstopping doubleheader. It all starts in Oklahoma City where the defending champions start their quest for a second consecutive title against the Houston Rockets. The Thunder still have all the talent that made them world beaters last season, so everyone’s expecting big things from this squad again. Meanwhile, the Rockets stormed through the preseason after adding Kevin Durant to the roster along with Clint Capela, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Josh Okogie. All that star power is augmenting a talented young core that Houston is hoping will take them deeper into the playoffs this time. Then, we keep the party going in California where the Golden State Warriors take on the Los Angeles Lakers. Stephen Curry is still getting it done for the Warriors, and after adding Jimmy Butler III last season, Golden State is ready to make a run. If they can avoid injuries, which continue to make things tough even in the preseason. The Lakers now have a full season of Lebron James and Luka Dončić on the court together. Those two plus a host of smart free agent pickups could return the Lakers to superstardom this season. It all starts Tuesday on the NBA Tip-Off.
