What is The Good Place about?
Created by Michael Schur (Parks and Recreation, The Office), The Good Place follows the morally corrupt Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), who – after mistakenly ending up in a heaven-like afterlife – learns it's never too late to change your ways.
The half-hour single-camera comedy originally ran for four seasons and 53 episodes on NBC from 2016 to 2020. The series also starred Ten Danson, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, D'Arcy Carden, and Manny Jacinto.
9 The Good Place episodes to watch
Warning: Some spoilers ahead.
1. "Everything Is Fine" (Season 1, Episode 1)
Newly deceased Eleanor Shellstrop is sent to the Good Place but only by mistake. Every epic adventure has to start somewhere, right? The Good Place’s first episode eases you into the world by establishing the rules of the afterlife and introducing an oddball group of characters: Michael, Chidi, Tahani, Janet, and Jason Mendoza.

2. "Michael's Gambit" (Season 1, Episode 13)
Eleanor and her friends think about their fates in the Good Place. Over the course of the first season, the crew believed in one truth – that they were sent to the Good Place when they died. However, the huge twist-filled finale episode throws everything out the window when Eleanor figures out they’ve been in... the Bad Place the entire time. Façades drop, realities are shattered, and everything gets reset.

3. "Everything Is Great!" (Season 2, Episode 1)
Their memories erased, Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason once again settle into the Good Place. The episode picks up immediately after “Michael’s Gambit,” with Michael, becoming one with his snarky side, desperately trying to make sure his ruse of the fake good place sticks this time. Things don’t go as planned (of course, they don’t!) and the episode kickstarts another season of existential soul-searching.

4. "Dance Dance Resolution" (Season 2, Episode 2)

5. "The Trolley Problem" (Season 2, Episode 5)
Chidi and Eleanor tackle a famous ethical dilemma, leading to a conflict with Michael. The episode takes one of philosophy’s classic questions and presents it in a way that’s both entertaining and (a little) terrifying: Would you divert a train to hit one person instead of five? Or do nothing and hit five people? It’s Chidi’s worst nightmare, as he endures realistic simulations of each scenario, and reveals a new dilemma in the process.

6. "Janet(s)" (Season 3, Episode 10)
With Janet's help, Michael hatches a plan; the gang has an out-of-body experience. If there’s one reason to watch this episode, it’s D’Arcy Carden’s performance playing multiple Janets. It’s a tour de force showing off Carden’s ability to hilariously channel Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason.

7. "Pandemonium" (Season 3, Episode 13)
Various events occur, in a certain specific order. Who doesn’t love a mind-blowing finale with added emotional depth? That’s exactly what you get in the bittersweet Season 3 finale, when Chidi makes the selfless choice to have his memories erased – forgetting Eleanor in the process.

8. "The Answer" (Season 4, Episode 9)
In an attempt to plan a better future, Chidi considers his past. Faced with a ticking clock when the world gets reset, the episode digs deep into Chidi’s past and upbringing, exploring why he is so obsessed with ethical quandaries and why he is so indecisive.

9. "Whenever You're Ready" (Season 4, Episodes 13)
Various conversations occur between various groups of people. The logline for the series finale may be vague, but it’s vague for a reason. As the gang prepares to say goodbye to their afterlives, some stepping through the proverbial door and others getting their wishes granted, it’s the perfect emotional bookend to The Good Place.
