Here are five reasons why you should hop in the Impala with the Winchester brothers.
Carry on, my wayward son...
Supernatural is streaming now on Peacock. All 15 seasons of the beloved cult hit, featuring demon hunters Sam and Dean Winchester as they battle evil, have arrived for your viewing pleasure. As the longest-running genre U.S. television series, there are 327 episodes to sink your teeth into for the first time – or second and third time. Here are five reasons why you should press play on Supernatural.
The Winchesters’ brotherly bond
Created by Eric Kripke (The Boys), Supernatural would not be the same without the rock-solid connection between brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles). Though their personalities clash at times – Sam is emotionally sensitive and intelligent, while Dean is the hard-charging hunter by trade – it makes their 15-season sojourn one emotional and wild rollercoaster. But it's the actors’ undeniable onscreen chemistry that truly brings Supernatural to a new level. While the Winchester brothers bicker and push each other to the brink, it’s all done with love as the core foundation.
The nods to classic rock
A strong soundtrack only elevates a TV show, and Supernatural has that in spades. It’s difficult not to think of Kansas’ 1976 anthem, “Carry on Wayward Son,” as Supernatural’s unofficial theme song. For 15 seasons, the track has been a Supernatural staple, playing at the end of every season to put a button on Sam and Dean’s ongoing sagas, and it totally makes sense. The lyrics perfectly mirror the Winchester brothers’ lives as “wayward sons” on the road to seeking fulfillment. Through Dean’s love of classic rock, the show has included impressive needle drops from AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bon Jovi, and Metallica, just to name a few bands. Some of the episode titles also pay tribute to Led Zeppelin classics.
The memorable supporting characters
Sam and Dean cross paths with many interesting characters throughout the series, from the snarky demon and the king of hell Crowley (Mark Sheppard) to the loyal hunter Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) tothe trenchcoat-wearing angel Castiel (Misha Collins). But it all starts with their father, John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who becomes a hunter and raises Sam and Dean to follow in his footsteps, after their mother, Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly), is killed. Other key supporting characters include fan-favorite Charlie Bradbury (Felicia Day), cop Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), quirky hunter Garth (DJ Qualls), and lovable devil Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino).
Spending time with Baby
Who doesn’t love the idea of hitting the road in a classic 1967 black Chevy Impala? Dean’s preferred set of wheels, whom he lovingly calls Baby, has become an iconic symbol of Supernatural. There’s even an entire Season 11 episode dedicated to the car, where all the action – aka Sam and Dean fighting demons and monsters – is seen from the perspective of Baby. Over the course of the series, the car has been through quite a lot and gotten the Winchester brothers out of many sticky situations.
Embracing the funny and the absurd
Despite almost exclusively dealing with life-and-death stakes, Supernatural finds time to lean into the comedy of Sam and Dean’s dire situations. Some of the most memorable moments come in the form of the meta episodes, where the series breaks the fourth wall and has a little wink and a nod to the audience. There’s the animated Scooby-Doo episode in Season 13, where Sam and Dean are thrust in with the Scooby Gang. There’s the Blazing Saddles-inspired hour from Season 6, titled “The French Mistake,” where Sam and Dean accidentally crash the set and play versions of their real actor selves, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. The show even celebrates its intense fandom in a Season 5 episode set at a fan convention, where people believe Sam and Dean are cosplayers playing Sam and Dean.
