Man City v. Aston Villa

Manchester City’s unbeaten streak in 2024 remains intact following a scoreless draw against Arsenal at the Etihad on Sunday, and the team aims to keep the streak alive against Aston Villa. Man City has won every home game against the Villans since 2012, and the most notable of those victories took place on the final day of the 2021/2022 Premier League campaign. The Cityzens were down 2-0 in the 75th minute and needed the full three points to overtake Liverpool and end the season in first place. They stepped up in clutch fashion when the odds were stacked against them, scoring three goals in the last moments of the match to secure the club’s eighth league title.

Defensive midfielder Rodri is having an outstanding season and is one to watch out for among Pep Guardiola’s talented cast of characters. He has scored in Man City’s last two home matches against Aston Villa. Likewise, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden account for 29 of the team’s Premier League goals and will be keen on punishing the Villans after losing to them last December. Nathan Aké was subbed out in the first half against Arsenal after sustaining an injury, and he is the newest addition to Man City’s list of unavailable players along with Kyle Walker and Ederson. Manuel Akanji will take Aké’s place at center back, opening up a spot for Rico Lewis on the right side of the back line. John Stones’ inclusion on the bench in the previous match bodes well for Man City fans who are raring to see the Englishman reappear on the pitch. His return could be the difference maker that allows Man City to catch up to Liverpool and Arsenal in the standings.

Aston Villa’s remarkable success has been two seasons in the making since Unai Emery’s arrival. The Spaniard is credited with reviving the club after years of disappointing results from previous managers. He has led the team to fourth in Premier League standings and to the quarterfinals of the Europa Conference League. The Villans’ most recent match was a 2–0 victory against Wolves last weekend courtesy of a stunning goal from Moussa Diaby and a tap-in from Ezri Konsa. Aston Villa has acquired a reputation for scoring goals early and holding strong defensively, having only dropped three points from leading positions in the league this season. The team has a realistic shot of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League if they keep producing positive results in the final stretch of the season. A win against Man City would bring them within two points of third place.

Aston Villa was the last team to defeat Manchester City following a 74’ goal from Jamaican winger Leon Bailey, who has totaled eight goals and eight assists in league games. Douglas Luiz has been brilliant in central midfield with nine goals and five assists on the season, having earned a call-up to the prestigious Brazilian national team during the March international break. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez will serve as captain while John McGinn remains suspended.

A key development for the fixture has been the injury to Aston Villa’s leading goal scorer Ollie Watkins in the match against Wolves. The striker was replaced by Jhon Durán at half time due to a hamstring injury, and Emery confirmed on Tuesday that he will be unavailable for this huge match against Man City. Watkins is tied for second in Premier League goals this season alongside Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke. Watkins has scored 16 times in 30 league games, and tomorrow marks the first Premier League match that he will miss since December 2022. Matty Cash and Jacob Ramsey were also ruled unfit to play while Tyrone Mings, Emiliano Buendia, and Boubacar Kamara sit out with season-ending injuries.
