Little House on the Prairie first premiered as a television movie on NBC on March 30, 1974. It starred Michael Landon and Karen Grassle as Charles and Caroline Ingalls, a couple who, in the 1870s, moves their family—including daughters Mary, Laura, and Carrie—from Wisconsin to the Kansas prairie lands. It's a big adjustment for the family as they navigate storms and fires, among other issues. The film ends with the Ingalls leaving Kansas. And by the proper show's series premiere on September 11, 1974, they're on to a new adventure. This time, the Ingalls land in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where Charles begins work at a mill. It's here where he gets enough lumber to build the "Little House" that becomes the Ingalls' permanent home—and part of the show's namesake.

Little House on the Prairie was a runaway hit for NBC, airing for nine seasons and airing over 200 episodes from 1974 to 1983. It racked up 16 Emmy nominations and took home four awards, including Outstanding Cinematography in 1978 and 1979, plus Outstanding Music Composition in both 1979 and 1982.

The show is known for its ensemble cast, which grew over the years as new characters were added to the story. The show’s casting director, Susan McCray, says finding the right actors for these roles was a creatively freeing process—because Landon, the show's star and producer, gave no literal character descriptions. McCray just worked off the scripts.

Melisssa Sue Anderson as Mary Ingalls Kendall, and Melissa Gilbert as Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder in Little House on the Prairie.

"When I worked on casting for other shows, I always got a description of a part," McCray told BuzzFeed. "Mike Landon didn't write any descriptions; I would only get a script. It really gave me the opportunity to use a creative sense, like when you read a book and you envision what that character is going to look like. I was really grateful for it, because it gave me a chance to hire and find actors who didn't already have a lot of experience. I went to a lot of theaters and showcases, and I was able to give many actors an opportunity that the networks wouldn't usually give."

Landon was, in many ways, the anchor of the show. He played Charles Ingalls from Seasons 1 through 8 as a full-time cast member and appeared in Season 9 as a supporting role, plus two post-series films.

"Mike was just the best to work with," McCray also told BuzzFeed. "He was really funny, and he was also honest. He was real, he knew what he wanted, and he made actors feel good, especially if someone was nervous."
