Erling Haaland of Man City and Bukayo Saka of Arsenal are expected to play in Premier League: Man City v. Arsenal Sunday at 11:30a ET on Peacock and NBC

The most important match of the Premier League season takes place on Sunday at Etihad Stadium. The reigning kings of England and Europe in Man City look to defend their home against a surging Arsenal side that hopes to claim their first league triumph since the club’s Invincible season 20 years ago. Join Peacock for this titanic fixture with major implications for the title race.

Man City v. Arsenal

Manchester City’s domination in Premier League began after the arrival of manager Pep Guardiola in 2016. The Cityzens emerged as champions in five of the last six Premier League campaigns, and their chances of adding to their trophy cabinet would increase sizably with a win against the Gunners. Man City has remained undefeated in all competitions so far in 2024, with their last defeat coming at the hands of Aston Villa in December. The club made vital adjustments after the loss, and has since won the Club World Cup, advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals and the FA Cup semifinals. Their last Premier League fixture before the March international break resulted in a 1–1 draw against second-place Liverpool. The match ended in controversy following a 98th minute high-boot challenge from Jérémy Doku on Alexis Mac Allister.

Man City’s roster is flush with elite talent that pose threats at all ends of the pitch. The front three of Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and Julián Álvarez have been clinical in front of net this season. Haaland leads the Premier League in goals scored for the second season in a row with 18. Foden has also had a remarkable year with 11 league goals and seven assists, with Guardiola calling him “the best player in the Premier League right now for the amount of things he does” in a BBC interview earlier this month. Rodri’s presence in defensive midfield and Bernardo Silva’s craftiness in the attacking third have been instrumental parts of Man City’s success, and Guardiola will look to them to facilitate chances past Arsenal’s back line.

The most notable obstacle to Man City’s fourth consecutive Premier League title are the injuries afflicting key players in the squad. Starting goalkeeper Ederson sustained a thigh injury in the Liverpool game while right-back Kyle Walker and center-back John Stones suffered untimely injuries during the international break. Club captain Kevin De Bruyne was sidelined for the first half of the season with a hamstring injury and is currently recovering from a groin strain. Injuries to Manuel Akanji, Jack Grealish, and Matheus Nunes have also posed problems, and the Cityzens will need to field a team at full strength this weekend.

Arsenal has been on a tear in the Premier League since the start of 2024. Though they’re tied on points with Liverpool entering Matchweek 30, their goalscoring form and defensive excellence have earned them the top spot in the standings due to goal difference. In this Premier League season, the Gunners are the first team to achieve 20 victories and have amassed an eight-game win streak since January that included 6–0 triumphs over West Ham and Sheffield United, and 5–0 victories over Crystal Palace and Burnley. Arsenal’s most important result of the season came against Liverpool at Emirates in February: A game in which they decisively handled the Reds with goals from Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard. The club’s last fixture before the international break was a closely contested tie with FC Porto in the Champions League that finished with a memorable penalty shootout showing from keeper David Raya.

Manager Mikel Arteta has an excess of attacking options at his disposal, with 22-year-old winger Bukayo Saka chief among them. With 21 goal contributions in the league this season, Saka has cemented himself as one of the most dynamic threats that English soccer has to offer. His play is further bolstered by Kai Havertz, who has found the back of the net in each of Arsenal’s last four Premier League games, and Declan Rice, who has scored in the last two. While goals have come easy for them, the same can’t be said for opponents tasked with dismantling Arsenal’s defense. William Saliba and Gabriel have emerged as one of Europe’s most solid center-back pairings, frustrating opposing offenses with Ben White, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Jakub Kiwior beside them. Captain Martin Ødegaard will lead his side into enemy territory in hopes of earning Arsenal a second league win against Manchester City.

A looming concern for Arsenal fans leading into Sunday is Saka’s status following news that he left the England camp early last week to rehabilitate a hamstring injury. Gabriel Martinelli was forced to withdraw from the Brazil squad due to injury as well, and the Gunners will have to wait to find out whether either of them are available to play this weekend.

Only one point separates Manchester City and Arsenal in the table, and a champion could be unofficially crowned if either team were to claim all three points. The matchup is rife with riveting storylines that range from the longstanding friendship between managers, countrymen going head-to-head immediately following the international break, both teams’ undefeated records in 2024 and injury woes. Arsenal bested Man City in the clubs’ last meeting courtesy of a late winner by Martinelli and the outcome of Sunday’s fixture will define the trajectory for the remainder of the season.
