What happened in the first Five Nights at Freddy's movie?

Set in the year 2000, Five Nights at Freddy's follows Mike (Josh Hutcherson), a down-on-his-luck security guard looking for a paycheck after he attacked a man at his last job, believing him to be a kidnapper. Kidnapping is an issue close to Mike's heart, because his brother Garrett was taken from the family years earlier, so he was willing to risk it all just to make sure a kid didn't get taken. Now, he's lost his job, and he's trying to keep steady work so his other sibling, his younger sister Abby (Piper Rubio), doesn't end up living with their shady Aunt Jane (Mary Stuart Masterson).

Desperate for work, Mike takes a job as a night guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, a defunct family restaurant still full of the old animatronics built to entertain the guests. Mike settles in for what should be fairly boring work, but he soon has dreams which tie Garrett's disappearance to Freddy Fazbear's, and he sees five other lost children in the same dreams. They're trying to tell him something, but he's not sure what.

Meanwhile, Aunt Jane tries to sabotage Mike's new gig (she gets child support payments if she gets custody of Abby) by hiring some local kids, including Abby's babysitter, Max (Kat Conner Sterling), to vandalize the pizzeria. The problem? The animatronics suddenly come alive and murder the kids, unbeknownst to anyone. Mike, unaware of Jane's plans, meets Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), a local cop with a connection to Freddy Fazbear's, who fills him in on some of the local lore. Freddy Fazbear's, it turns out, was the site of several child disappearances in the 1980s, which is why it's still closed.

With Max out of the picture, Mike brings Abby to work with him, where she develops a strange connection to the animatronics, each of which hold the souls of dead children who disappeared from Freddy Fazbear's all those years ago. Realizing the danger, especially after the children come to him in a dream and offer a chance to see Garrett in exchange for Abby, Mike sends his sister to Jane's, only to have one of the animatronics abduct her and bring her back to the restaurant.

Because Abby's in very real, very urgent danger, Vanessa finally explains that she's the daughter of a man named William Afton, a serial killer who used Freddy Fazbear's to kill his young victims, then hid their bodies in the animatronics. The kids, driven by vengeance and loneliness, want Abby to join them so they can have a new soul to play with, but that's not the only threat. Afton is still very much alive, moving through Freddy Fazbear's in an animatronic yellow rabbit suit, and Mike is shocked to discover that he's actually the same career counselor (Matthew Lillard) who gave him the job in the first place. In an effort to convince the souls of the children that Afton is not their friend, Abby draws pictures laying out the truth. The animatronics rebel and attack Afton, who suffers mortal wounds as Freddy Fazbear's collapses around him. Mike, Abby, and a wounded Vanessa escape the restaurant, seemingly done with the danger for good.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is set two years after the first film, in 2002, and follows Mike and Abby as they try to move on with their lives after the trauma they suffered at Freddy Fazbear's. Unfortunately for Mike, Abby is still worried about the souls of the children trapped in the animatronics, and when she dares to go back and check on them, she sets off a chain of events that plunges the family into horror again.
