Liverpool host Brighton in Matchweek 16 of Premier League.
Liverpool hopes to get back to their winning ways in Premier League this weekend when they host Brighton at Anfield.
Liverpool v Brighton
Undefeated in their last four games in all competitions, Liverpool are looking to build momentum ahead of the festive period. Fresh off an impressive 1–0 victory against Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, the Reds will be eager to produce back-to-back wins for the first time since early November. Now sitting in 10th place on the table, level on points with their opponents Brighton, Liverpool must win on Saturday if they hope to challenge for the top five at minimum. The Reds may still be without star man Mohammed Salah for this one, whose comments about the club and manager Arne Slot resulted in him being left out of the squad against Inter in midweek. It was reported that he was back in training with the team this week, but it remains to be seen whether Slot will include him in the lineup against Brighton on Saturday. With Salah heading off to the African Cup of Nations quite soon, an appearance against Brighton could be his last for Liverpool given the murky status of his future with the club. If Slot decides to leave Salah out of the team for Saturday, there is still plenty of talent at the manager’s disposal. Against Inter, Slot opted to start Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak together upfront. Ekitike bagged a brace against Leeds last weekend and has proven to be a consistent threat for the Reds since his arrival this summer. Isak, on the other hand, has been much quieter for his new club. He scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool at the end of November and will be eager to find some form in the festive period. Behind them, Dominik Szoboszlai has been superb this season and has been filling in for Salah on the right-hand side. He has two goals in his last two games and will need to maintain his level of performance until the Salah situation is resolved. Defensively, Liverpool have improved at the back after a disastrous run of ten goals conceded in three games in November. They have two clean sheets in their last four games in all competitions, and with the exception of conceding three goals in spectacular fashion last weekend against Leeds, the defense has looked stout yet again. With all of the drama and uncertainty that’s surrounding the club right now, a win against Brighton would be immense for Slot and Liverpool.
Currently in 8th place on the Premier League table and only two points behind Chelsea in 5th, Brighton have enjoyed a decent start to the season. The Seagulls went unbeaten in the month of November, conceding only one goal, but have not yet won a game in December. Fabian Hürzeler’s men were able to salvage a draw against West Ham on Sunday with a last-minute equalizer from Georginio Rutter, but the team will be eager to bounce back against Liverpool in a match that looks ripe for the taking. Leading the line will likely be Danny Welbeck. Welbeck has seven goals in the league this season and has been very consistent for the Seagulls ever since he joined. He will have his work cut out for him facing off against Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, but if Brighton hope to take anything from this game, they’ll need Welbeck to be clinical in front of goal. Providing him service will be Rutter along with Yankuba Minteh. Rutter scored his first goal of the season against West Ham and has two assists so far as well, numbers that he will be eager to improve upon. Minteh is a constant threat off the right and his matchup with either Andrew Robertson or Milos Kerkez will be one to watch out for. In midfield, it appears that Brighton have found yet another young talent in Diego Gomez. At only 22 years of age, Gomez has been impressive this year and if his partner in midfield Carlos Baleba can regain his form from last season, the pair would form a formidable duo in the middle of the field. If Brighton can win the midfield battle, the Seagulls will be able to control the game and counter quickly against Liverpool. Defensively, Brighton have yet to keep a clean sheet in December and have conceded five goals in their last two games. Jan Paul van Hecke has proven to be one of the best center-backs in the league this season and Lewis Dunk has plenty of experience, but they will be tested by Ekitike and Isak this weekend. If Brighton can survive Liverpool’s early pressure and frustrate the Reds, they have the pace and ability on the counter to really threaten Slot’s men.
