Now that all eight episodes of Crystal Lake are streaming exclusively on Peacock, horror fans are unpacking the many ways showrunner Brad Caleb Kane pays tribute to the original Friday the 13th franchise. The Peacock Original seeds an exciting array of Easter eggs throughout the series, including painstaking shot-for-shot recreated sequences from the film, character callbacks, visual references, and even musical cue reprises.

Crystal Lake stars Linda Cardellini as Pam Voorhees, who loses her only child Jason when he drowns at the camp where she works as a cook. Conceived as a prequel to the first film, the series reveals the events that pushed Pam, an aspiring singer turned grieving mother, to become an unhinged serial killer lurking the grounds of Camp Crystal Lake.

After you’re watched, join us below in connecting all the dots between the movie franchise and the series.

Crystal Lake's Episode 1 titles mirror the Friday the 13th film titles

In the first Friday the 13th film, a 3D title swings into frame and lands with glass smashing in a rudimentary, 1980s-era graphics effect.

The title screen for Crystal Lake Episode 1 has the same font and 3D lettering, replete with the smashed glass and the addition of blood on the letters. The camp's sign is identical to the film's as well.

Pam’s scream in Crystal Lake matches Claudette’s in Friday the 13th

Crystal Lake's opening reveals exactly how young Jason drowns: Counselor Claudette (Danielle Kotch) left him alone to fool around with her boyfriend. Activated by Jason's screams, Pam (Cardellini) jumps into the lake to save him, but he slips under the surface. The camera pushes into Pam's loud screech of “Jason,” freeze-framing on her mouth.

Eagled-eyed franchise fans will know this visually recreates the Friday the 13th freeze frame of movie Claudette's (Debra S. Hayes) murder scream in the film's opening scene.

Linda Cardellini wears Mrs. Voorhees’ blue sweater

In the climax of Friday the 13th, original Mrs. Voorhees actress Betsy Palmer wears an ice blue knit sweater upon her return to Camp Crystal Lake.

In Crystal Lake, Linda Cardellini sports a reproduction of that sweater starting in Episode 5.

Claudette and Barry’s demise is recreated shot-for-shot

At the 41-minute mark of Crystal Lake Episode 5, directors Celine Held and Logan George created a shot-for-shot remake of Friday the 13th's famous first kill scene.

Danielle Kotch as Claudette and Phoenix Parnevik as Barry on Crystal Lake Season 1.

In both the show and the movie sequences, camp counselors Barry (Willie Adams) and Claudette are murdered in the boat house. In Crystal Lake, Claudette and Barry (Phoenix Parnevik) match the scene from the film with exact precision up until their murderer is revealed.

The snake that slithers from Friday the 13th film to Crystal Lake

In Friday the 13th, Alice (Adrienne King) finds a snake in her cabin and enlists the aid of her fellow counselors. The most enthusiastic volunteer is Bill (Harry Crosby), who runs in with a machete and viciously chops up the snake.

Crystal Lake honors that snake’s service with a scene early in Episode 1 in which Pam discovers one in the camp kitchen. She traps it in a bucket and takes it out to the woods to live another day.

Jason Voorhees wears the same burlap sack from the movies

While most people picture Jason stalking victims in his iconic hockey mask, the character didn’t wear it until Friday the 13th Part III. The first film where Jason gets his own story is Friday the 13th Part 2, and he’s only seen wearing a burlap sack with a single eyehole.

Episode 8 of Crystal Lake establishes Jason in that burlap sack face-covering in a callback to the movies.

Harry Manfredini’s Friday the 13th theme redux

Composer Harry Manfredini's musical cue from Friday the 13th, "Welcome to Crystal Lake,” became a bombastic horror score classic. The series reimagines his theme for the Crystal Lake.

Jason’s signature "ki ki ki, ma ma ma" kill sound returns

Throughout the entire Friday the 13th movie franchise, Jason’s POV is either implied or underscored with a distinctive "ki-ki-ki, ma-ma-ma” sound. Composer Harry Manfredini created that singular cue for the first movie, and Caleb Kane carries it over to Crystal Lake. It’s first heard in the pilot episode.

Crazy Ralph has a new backstory

Friday the 13th features a veteran character nicknamed Crazy Ralph (Walt Gorney), who is initially a primary suspect for the Camp Crystal Lake slayings. The character returns in Friday the 13th Part II and Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood.

In the Crystal Lake series, Ralph (Nick Cordileone) is given a deeper back story as a traumatized Vietnam war vet with PTSD. Again, he is a primary suspect for the murders around the camp.

Both Mrs. Vorhees wield machetes

When Mrs. Voorhees (Palmer) appears in the final reel of the Friday the 13th movie, she's casually reveals to camp counselor Alice (Adrienne King) that she wears a machete holster under her sweater. Mrs. Voorhees whips it out and she attempts to murder Alice.

In Crystal Lake, the machete first appears when young Jason enthusiastically swings it around in the house next to his mother. After his drowning, Pam is first seen using the machete in Episode 1 when she’s fighting off the two males who try to kidnap her. The accessory from hell continues to show up throughout Season 1.

Friday the 13th’s Annie victim gets remixed in Crystal Lake

Friday the 13th’s 1979 storyline opens with a girl named Annie Phillips hitchhiking to her new camp counselor job. She’s picked up by an unseen driver who chases her into the woods and slashes her throat.

In Episode 4 of Crystal Lake, the series recreates that sequence with Willow, a hitchhiking hippie arriving new to town She stops at the diner for a Coke where she meets Ralph. Willow walks to camp through the woods, gets spooked by noises, is chased and steps on a bear trap.
