Arizona vs. Purdue: College Basketball on Peacock

Arizona Wildcats

The Wildcats are currently ranked No.1 in the nation, putting their undefeated record on the line vs. No. 3 Purdue this weekend in the 2023 Indy Classic from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Last weekend, behind a career high 21 points from senior guard Pelle Larsson and 20 points from senior guard Caleb Love, Arizona knocked off No. 23 Wisconsin 98-73 to clinch their eighth straight win to start the 2023 season. Arizona is playing as the top team in the country for the first time in nine years.

Guard Caleb Love leads the way for Arizona, averaging 14.1 points per game (Wildcats’ leading scorer) as well as 5 rebounds and 4.5 assists.

Last month, Arizona went into Cameron Indoor Arena and knocked off the Duke Blue Devils 78-73. Coming into the game, they were ranked No. 2 in the country. The Wildcats held off a 25-point performance from Duke’s star center Kyle Filipowski. Wildcats Senior forward Keshad Johnson converted a three-point play with 46.8 seconds left (layup and the foul) that pushed Arizona in front and helped seal the victory.

It was a huge step in the right direction for the Wildcats, clinching their first road win versus a top-2 ranked opponent since March, 2001.

Purdue Boilermakers

The Boilermakers are off to a strong start to the 2023 season. After beginning the year on a seven-game winning streak, Purdue lost their first game of the year — a 92-88 overtime loss to Northwestern on December 1. They are currently ranked No.3 in the latest AP Top 25 poll.

They rebounded with a 92-86 victory over Alabama this past weekend in Toronto, Ontario. The game was a homecoming for Purdue big man Zach Edey, the 2023 National Player of the Year and Canadian native. This is the first time Edey has played in his home city since 2016-17, when he was a sophomore in high school.

Edey felt very comfortable in his home country, scoring a season-high 35 points in the victory. Sophomore guard Braden Smith also had a season high with 27 points in the victory.

Star center Zach Edey is currently first in the nation in scoring, averaging 24.8 points per game as well as 10.8 rebounds per game, good for sixth in the nation.

Purdue has won 31 straight non-conference, regular-season games, tied for the longest streak for any program in the country over the last 10 years (31 by Villanova from 2015-18). It will have been over three years (Dec. 8, 2020 vs. Miami) since Purdue lost in the non-con.

Head-to-Head

Purdue owns the head-to-head matchup between the two schools 8-4, dating back to 1934. They last faced off on November 24, 2017, when the Boilermakers defeated Arizona 89-64 on a neutral site at Paradise Island in the Bahamas during the 2017 Battle 4 Atlantis.
