Red-hot Aston Villa visit Chelsea this weekend at Stamford Bridge in a match that will have major implications in the Premier League’s title race.

Chelsea v Aston Villa

With 17 games now played, Chelsea sit in 4th place on the Premier League table, seven points behind Aston Villa in 3rd. The Blues are unbeaten in their last three games in all competitions, fresh off an impressive 2–2 second-half comeback against Newcastle last Saturday. This will be a big game for Enzo Maresca’s men, who will be eager to get back into the title race after dropping to 10 points behind league-leaders Arsenal. Maresca will be overjoyed with the return of star man Cole Palmer, who has worked his way back from groin and toe injuries sustained earlier this season. Palmer has struggled to stay fit this year, but Maresca recently confirmed that he will be able to play the full 90 minutes against Aston Villa after having his play time limited in previous appearances. The Blues also welcomed back Moisés Caicedo from his three-game suspension last weekend against Newcastle and Estêvão is reportedly back to full fitness and will be available for Saturday’s match. Maresca will have close to his strongest lineup available against Aston Villa, especially up front. Pedro Neto should retain his starting position, with Palmer in the middle and João Pedro leading the line. Yet, Maresca will have a decision to make for his fourth attacker between Estêvão and Alejandro Garnacho, who has two goals in his last two matches. Maresca will also have a selection headache in midfield with the return of Caicedo and Reece James’ impressive run of form, leaving no room for Enzo Fernández in the starting lineup. Defensively, the Blues will need to prepare for Morgan Rogers, who has arguably been the most in-form player in the league along with Erling Haaland in recent weeks. Chelsea have two clean sheets in their last five games in all competitions and will need to be wary of Aston Villa on the counterattack.

After starting the season winless in their first five Premier League matches with only one goal scored, Aston Villa have won 11 of their last 12 in the league, vaulting them to third in the table and only three points behind Arsenal in first. The Villans have won their last ten games in all competitions and are the most in-form team in Premier League right now, if not in all of Europe. Fresh off a 2–1 victory over Manchester United last weekend, Unai Emery’s men face a tough test at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. A win would push them 10 points clear of Chelsea with half the season done, which would be massive for the team and their goals. Star man Morgan Rogers has been in impeccable form in December, scoring four goals in his last two games, and Emery will rely on Rogers to spark the attack on Saturday. He has been a constant threat from the left-hand side, cutting in on his right foot and creating chances. Up front, Ollie Watkins has struggled for goals this season with a tally of only three so far. Watkins still serves as a threat for defenders and his pace and link-up play will be critical when going forward. Joining Rogers and Watkins will be captain John McGinn off the left and Youri Tielemans through the middle, forming a potent attack that has scored 11 goals in their last four Premier League matches. Defensively, Aston Villa has not kept a clean sheet in their last five games in all competitions. Pau Torres will likely be unavailable against Chelsea due to injury, and will be sorely missed by the Villans. Center back Ezri Konsa will be crucial in organizing the defense and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will certainly be called into action for this one.
