Manchester United travel to London to face Tottenham Hotspur in a battle between two of the Big Six in Premier League

Spurs v Manchester United

Sitting in sixth place on the Premier League table after 10 games, Spurs have had an inconsistent start to life under Thomas Frank. After impressively beating Everton 3–0 away from home, Frank’s men were then knocked out of the EFL Cup by Newcastle and beaten 1-0 at home to London rivals Chelsea. Spurs followed up those two defeats with a convincing 4–0 victory against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday. Unbeaten after four matches in the Champions League, Tottenham Hotspur is eager to translate their European form to Premier League, starting with a win against Manchester United on Saturday. Spurs may have to do so without star summer signing Mohammed Kudus, whose status is up in the air with a knock suffered against Chelsea last weekend. Frank has a plethora of options in attack to replace Kudus and he has been prone to rotate his players up front. Midweek, Brennan Johnson, Xavi Simons, and Wilson Odobert all stepped up with goal contributions and will be looking to keep their place in the starting lineup against United. Up top, it appears that Frank has started to prefer summer signing Randal Kolo Muani over Richarlison, with Kolo Muani starting three of the last four matches in all competitions. With Dominic Solanke still out injured, Frank will need his forwards to contribute more goals. Kolo Muani is still scoreless on the year and Richarlison hasn’t found the back of the net since September. Interestingly enough, center-back Micky van de Ven is Spurs’ top goalscorer this season in all competitions and the team will need that to change if they hope to challenge for silverware this year. Defensively, Spurs have kept three clean sheets in their last five matches in all competitions and the return of Cristian Romero from injury ahead of this match will be crucial in stopping a potent United attack.

Sitting in eighth place in the table, but level on points with Spurs and Chelsea in sixth and seventh respectively, Manchester United have enjoyed a recent strong run of form. The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last four Premier League matches, scoring 10 goals in the process. This is arguably the best United has played under Ruben Amorim, and Amorim will be looking to keep this consistency going into a difficult test at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Red Devils are eager to walk away with all three points and will likely rely on the counter to create opportunities against Spurs. Leading the counter will be talisman Bruno Fernandes. Employed in a deeper role this season, Fernandes has been pivotal for United in their unbeaten run with two assists in their last four games, and it’s no secret that the team’s attack runs through him. Playing in front of Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have been superb for United after arriving this summer and hope to threaten Spurs’ backline. Mbuemo has three goals and one assist across this unbeaten run along with one goal from Cunha. Mbeumo has been in red-hot form of late and Cunha will be eager to continue scoring for the Red Devils after netting for the first time against Brighton. Up front, Benjamin Sesko has somewhat struggled since arriving from RB Lepizig. Sesko has two goals and an assist so far for his new club, and he is still clearly adjusting to life in England. A goal against Spurs this weekend would do wonders for his confidence going forward. Defensively, Amorim’s men have only kept one clean sheet across all competitions this season, a stat the Red Devils must improve upon if they hope to achieve their goals this year. The emergence of goalkeeper Senne Lammens has limited errors from the back, but United will need to be stout away from home against Spurs if they hope to take anything away from this game.
