Houston Rockets vs. Phoenix Suns

After starting the season 0–2, the Rockets are now 10–3, sitting in 3rd place in the Western Conference standings behind the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Denver Nuggets. Houston has won five straight games, including impressive wins against the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Orlando Magic. They will face a tough test against the Denver Nuggets on Friday night in the NBA Cup before taking on the Suns on Monday. Coach Ime Udoka will be looking to build momentum ahead of the busy holiday period and reclaim the 2nd position in the Western Conference standings, where they finished the 2024–25 season. He will rely on his powerful duo of Kevin Durant and Alperen Şengün to do just that. Durant, after arriving from the Suns in a blockbuster trade this summer, will be returning to Phoenix for the first time since his move away. He is averaging 25.5 points per game for the Rockets and is clearly loving his new home. He will be relishing the chance to play against his former team and hopes to walk away Monday night with a victory. Şengün, still only 23 years old, has made a big leap this season. He’s averaging 23.4 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game, along with roughly a block and a steal per game as well. He has been exceptional to start the season and is making a strong case to be an All-Star starter this year. In addition to Durant and Şengün, Amen Thompson has enjoyed a good start to his third NBA season, averaging 16.8 points per game to go along with his stellar defense. The Rockets are one of the strongest teams in the Western Conference and will be eager to solidify a top spot in the standings ahead of the playoffs in April.

The Phoenix Suns are currently 9–6 and in 7th place in the Western Conference standings. They are 6–1 in their last seven games, but will face off against the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs before hosting the Rockets on Monday night. After completely shaking up their roster over the summer, including the departures of Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, the Suns are over the moon with their start to the season. Devin Booker has been superb this year, averaging 27.8 points and 6.9 assists per game. With Durant now in Houston, Booker is the clear No. 1 option for this Suns team and Phoenix will rely on his scoring if they hope to make the playoffs this season. Supporting Booker has been Dillon Brooks, who arrived over the summer as part of the Kevin Durant trade. With Jalen Green out to injury, Brooks has stepped up for the Suns, averaging 20.9 points and 2.1 steals per game in addition to his efforts on the defensive end. Another new addition to the starting lineup is former Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams. He’s averaging 11.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. While Phoenix continues to develop No. 10 pick Khaman Maluach, the team will rely on Williams, still only 23, to be a presence on both sides of the floor. The Suns will be raring to go for this one with the return of Kevin Durant to Phoenix and will be eager to defeat their former teammate.
