The NBA is LIVE on NBC and Peacock. This week, Peacock NBA Monday brings you a can’t-miss doubleheader. The first matchup takes us to Orlando, FL where the Chicago Bulls will take on the hometown Magic.
Chicaco Bulls vs. Orlando Magic
The Bulls (9–8, 9th in Eastern Conference) began the season with a stunning 6–1 start, but have settled into the lower middle of the Eastern Conference standings since. They’ve faced some tough losses since that strong start and, at time of writing, are just coming off a 143–130 loss to the Pelicans. The long weekend contains two opportunities to bounce back before their Monday night matchup against the Magic, though. With games against the 4–13 Hornets and the 2–15 Pacers this weekend, the Bulls could find themselves a couple places higher by Monday’s tipoff. The Bulls have struggled on defense this season, which is really the main issue. On offense, this team cooks. Guard Josh Giddey puts up 20.5 points per game with 9.8 rebounds and 9.8 assists. Coby White puts up even more with 24 points per game with center Nikola Vucevic and forward Matas Buzelis coming just behind at 16.7 and 13.8 ppg respectively. This team can put points on the board. The problem is so can their opponents. In nine games this year, the Bulls have been able to win the scoring race. In almost as many, they haven’t. The good news is that speed generally favors the Bulls. If they can keep the pace of the game high, and nab some more defensive rebounds, they can come out ahead on Monday Night.
The Magic (11–8, 7th in Eastern Conference) are coming off a thunderous NBA Cup group stage win over the Philadelphia 76ers. In that victory, they set a new franchise record for points scored in the second quarter with 51. They now have the 10th best offense in the league. They’ve won six of their last eight games, and they’ve done all of that without forward Paolo Banchero. Banchero went out with a groin injury two weeks ago and still has no timeline to return. Fortunately for the Magic, the rest of the team has more than been able to make up for his absence. Franz Wagner has been putting up 22.9 points per game, Desmond Bane has been putting up 17.3, and then there’s Anthony Black. Black’s average is 12.8 points per game, but on Tuesday against Philadelphia, he was the Magic’s biggest contributor with a 31-point performance. This is a team that can score no matter who has the ball, and they’re proving themselves to be a real threat in the Eastern Conference. Whatever struggles they faced earlier in the season seem to have been addressed. If they keep up this pace, they can win a points race with anybody. That may serve them well against a Bulls team that prioritizes running up the score.
