In the second game of Peacock’s and NBC’s NBA Tip-Off doubleheader on opening night, the Warriors and Lakers will face off in a battle between two teams looking to make the playoffs in a stacked Western Conference.

Warriors vs. Lakers

Under long-time head coach Steve Kerr, the Warriors finished the 2024-25 season as the 7th seed in the Western Conference. They ultimately defeated the 2nd-seeded Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs before being knocked out by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round, largely in part to an injury to star Stephen Curry. Curry is now healthy to start the new NBA season and he will be joined by a majority of the same supporting cast from last year. Jimmy Butler headlines that supporting cast after his trade last season from the Miami Heat; the Warriors went 22–5 when both him and Curry were in the starting lineup together. Draymond Green, fresh off coming in 3rd in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2025, will join Butler and Curry to form a potent trio that will aim to lead the Warriors to a championship this season. Throw in an expected leap for third-year Brandin Podziemski, and the Dubs could have some serious offensive firepower on their hands. It’s no secret that with Curry being 37, Green being 35, and Butler being 36, the Warriors’ championship window is closing. Given how well the team ended last year with the arrival of Butler, Steve Kerr hopes for a strong start to this season ahead of a playoff push in April. With the Jonathan Kuminga saga finally wrapped up and Al Horford signing with the team before preseason, the Dubs will be ready to go against the Lakers on opening night.

In his first season as head coach of the Lakers, JJ Redick led his team to a 50-32 record, good enough for the 3rd seed in the Western Conference. Disappointingly, LA went on to lose to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games in the first round of the playoffs, marking their second consecutive first round playoff exit. Now with a season under his belt, Redick will be looking for improvement. Luka Doncic’s arrival in February in a blockbuster trade that saw Anthony Davis depart for the Dallas Mavericks gave the team little time to adjust to such a big change before the playoffs. The Lakers still went 18-10 when Doncic was in the lineup, excluding the playoffs, but Redick hopes the summer has given the team plenty of time to gel ahead of the new season. The priority will be determining how to get the best out of Doncic’s pairing with fellow star Lebron James. James is entering a record-breaking 23rd NBA season after a year where he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists at the age of 40. He has already been ruled out for the opener against the Warriors after being diagnosed with sciatica, and is reportedly targeting a return to the lineup sometime in mid-November. In his absence, the Lakers will rely on Austin Reaves to step up and support Doncic on offense. Reaves has been proven to be a consistent scorer for LA, and Redick will lean on him to step up until Lebron James returns from injury. The Lakers’ offseason additions will also be crucial not only in James’ absence, but throughout the entire season. It will be intriguing to watch how veterans Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart adjust in LA and how the young talent of Jake LaRavia and rookie Adou Thiero can impact the team.
