Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers
Fresh off a 111–107 victory over the Orlando Magic on Sunday night, the Boston Celtics are 5–6 after 11 games this season, currently sitting at 10th place in the Eastern Conference at time of writing. After a roster overhaul over this summer, and with star Jayson Tatum sidelined this year with an injury, the Celtics came into this season with mixed expectations. They still maintain a roster that is capable of reaching the playoffs, but without Tatum, Holiday, and Porzingis, the Celtics are no longer the championship favorites of years past. Yet, a play-in berth is more than realistic and coach Joe Mazzulla still has plenty of talent at his disposal. Four-time All-Star Jaylen Brown has stepped up in Tatum’s absence, averaging an impressive 28 points per game. To go along with his superb defense, Brown recognizes his responsibility to lead this team offensively and his scoring will continue to be pivotal, especially against the Sixers on Tuesday night. Derrick White and Payton Pritchard will be called upon as well this season with Tatum out. White has emerged as an efficient two-way star in recent years, and is currently averaging 14.9 points a game along with 5.1 assists and 2 steals per contest. Pritchard, now inserted fully into the starting lineup, is averaging 15.5 points and 5.1 assists per game and his 3-point shooting is an asset the Celtics will rely upon in big games. If Joe Mazzulla’s men can keep the red-hot Tyrese Maxey at bay, Boston can beat their rivals in Philadelphia and bring their record to .500 on the season.
After starting the season 4–0, The Philadelphia 76ers are now 6-4 after a loss to the Detroit Pistons, the current 1-seed of the Eastern Conference, on Sunday. Despite their strong start, the Sixers sit in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings, tied in record with the Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks. Coach Nick Nurse will be eager to return the team to their winning ways when they host the Celtics on Tuesday. To do so, the 76ers will rely on point guard Tyrese Maxey to lead the team to victory. Maxey has enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, averaging a whopping 33.2 points and 8.2 assists per game. He has been in amazing form and has not scored less than 26 points in an NBA game so far this year. You can make the argument that Maxey has now become the focal point of this Sixers team, taking over the reigns from Joel Embiid. Speaking of Embiid, after missing a majority of last season to a left knee injury, the 76ers’ coaching staff has been very careful with his return to NBA action. He has been ruled out of a few games due to load management and Nick Nurse has routinely limited his minutes this season, with Embiid averaging 23.3 minutes a game. The Sixers want to ensure his recovery is handled with extra care so that he can be ready for the playoffs in April. Despite these restrictions, Embiid is still performing well this year, averaging 19.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks a game. In addition to Maxey and Embiid, the Sixers have a strong supporting cast with Paul George, Jared McCain, 2025 3rd overall pick V.J. Edgecombe, and Kelly Oubre Jr. George is still waiting to make his season debut after left knee surgery this offseason and McCain just returned to the court last week against the Chicago Bulls, but will need time to find his rhythm again. In their absence, Edgecombe and Oubre have really stepped up, averaging 16.3 points and 18.6 points per game respectively.
