The NBA is LIVE on NBC and Peacock. Catch a weekly Tuesday night doubleheader on Coast 2 Coast Tuesday all regular season long. The second matchup of this week’s doubleheader takes us to Sacramento, CA where the Denver Nuggets will take on the hometown Kings.
Denver Nuggets vs. Sacramento Kings
The Nuggets (7–2, 3rd in Western Conference) are on a four-game winning streak and are looking to make it five on the road this Tuesday. Their current streak actually started with a win over the Kings at home just one week ago. Now, they hope to get a sweep going when they head to Sacramento for their tenth game of the season. Three-time MVP Nikola Jokic is still a beast on the court, netting his sixth triple-double of the season during Saturday’s win over the Indiana Pacers. Jokic had 32 points, 14 rebounds, and 14 assists in that game. Denver was without Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon on Saturday, and while they would love to have both players back by Tuesday night, the rest of the team showed they are capable of stepping up in their absence. Particularly Peyton Watson, who played 27 minutes and put up 16 points on Saturday. Without two of their starters, this team really shined on defense. With a defensive rating of 108.1, the Nuggets have the second-best defense in the NBA, with only the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder ahead of them. This is a team that swarms opponents, forcing them to take tough shots and then picking up the rebound. If they can keep making improvements on defense, and Jokic continues to do Jokic things on the court, the Nuggets could pick up their fifth straight win in Sacramento.
The Kings (3–7, 13th in Western Conference) faced a tough early-season schedule, leading to a .300 record through their first ten games. They may not have seen as many wins as their Tuesday night opponents, but they’ve pulled off some significant upsets so far, including a 135–133 nail-biting victory over the Milwaukee Bucks at the beginning of the month and a 121–116 win over the Warriors last Wednesday. It doesn’t help that the Kings had to go without star center Domantas Sabonis for most of the last week. Sabonis returned on Sunday, and though the team lost that game to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sabonis showed no signs of slowing down. He picked up a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds in 30 minutes of playing time. Even with the team’s struggles, Sabonis’ return to the court dramatically improved the Kings’ overall performance on Sunday. Of course, Sabonis isn’t the only player putting in work for Sacramento. Small forward DeMar DeRozan put up 22 points in 29 minutes against the Timberwolves, and guard Zach Levine put up 26. Then there's Russell Westbrook, who’s been getting even better the more minutes he puts in on the floor. There is some serious offensive talent on this team, and if they can get their defensive play on the same level, the Kings could deliver the home crowd a win on Coast 2 Coast Tuesday.
