Super Wild Card Weekend is home to some of the most thrilling matchups of the NFL season. On Sunday night, two of the top teams in the NFC fight to keep their postseasons alive. Sunday night’s game brings the action to Detroit, MI, where the Los Angeles Rams will take on the hometown Lions. 

Los Angeles Rams vs. Detroit Lions 

The Rams (10–7, 2nd in NFC West, 6th Seed) saw a lot of ups and downs over the 2023 season, but you could never count this team out. With some key wins in December against the Brown, Commanders, Saints, and Giants (along with late-season losses by the division rival Seahawks), this Los Angeles team earned a spot in the playoffs. Now, quarterback Matt Stafford will face his old team in the playoffs. The chance to win in a stadium he called home for 12 years, and to take the Rams one step closer to another Super Bowl, should provide all the motivation he needs this Sunday.  

The Rams finished the season strong with only one loss in their last eight games. That loss happened in overtime against the Baltimore Ravens, one of the best teams in the league. Matthew Stafford is quick and accurate with the ball, and wide receiver Cooper Cup can turn any catch into a huge gain. Once he gets in motion, it takes so much to bring him down. The Lions’ pass defense hasn’t been tested quite like this. The Rams defense on the other hand has only gotten better as the season went on. With a core of young players led by veteran defensive tackle Aaron Donald, this defensive unit has been making big stops and limiting what offenses can do. They’ll put a ton of pressure on Lions QB Jared Goff, and if Detroit isn’t prepared, Los Angeles will pull off the Wild Card upset. 

The Lions (12–5, 1st in NFC North, 3rd Seed) are hosting their first home playoff game since 1994. For that reason alone, they want to make this one special. Add the fact that QB Jared Goff will be playing against his former team, and Detroit is going to come out hot. Goff will be eager to show the Rams exactly what they gave up when they traded him in 2021. The Lions sprinted out of the gate this season, beating the Super Bowl Champion Chiefs 21–20 in the NFL Kickoff. That set the tone for the season, and outside of a few off weeks, they haven’t slowed down at all. They swept their division rivals the Vikings in the last weeks of the season and split their series with an ascendent Packers team. The only major upset was a Dec 10 loss to the Bears. Goff threw two interceptions that game and was sacked four times. The weeks after that game made it look more like a fluke, though. The Lions won three of the next four, nearly beat the Cowboys in a 20–19 loss, and clinched the division title.  

This team is an absolute force, and now they’re going to be playing in front of an already loud and passionate fanbase attending their first playoff home game in 30 years. We haven’t even mentioned the weather. The Lions are set to host a team from Los Angeles in 12-degree temperatures. There’s sure to be a lot of back-and-forth scoring in this game, but those factors may give Detroit a slight edge. If they play the way they have been all season, Detroit will see their first playoff win since 1992.
