New England Patriots vs. Baltimore Ravens
The Patriots (11–3, 1st in AFC East) are a game ahead at the top of their division despite a loss to the second-place Buffalo Bills last week. That means if they want to hold onto their place at the top, they can’t afford to drop another game. Especially if they want a shot at the No. 1 AFC seed. This is the game to prove that they can hang with all the other playoff contenders. Most of the teams they’ve beaten this season don’t have a winning record, though they did beat the Bills in their first meeting back in October. On the road against a surging Ravens team, the Patriots have an opportunity to prove they’re a real threat. Quarterback Drake Maye should have no problem with that. He has a real shot at MVP this season with 3,567 passing yards and 23 touchdowns so far. He’s a playmaker who is deadly accurate with the deep ball. And that very deep ball is something the Ravens have struggled to defend this year. New England will rely on running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson heavily for this game. The running game was a bright spot in last week’s loss to the Bills, and while the Ravens are better at defending the run, the Patriots will need to be strong on the ground to open up deep passing opportunities for Maye. If the offense can sustain a high pace through all four quarters, they could leave Baltimore with a statement win on Sunday.
The Ravens (7–7, 2nd in AFC North) are just one game behind the first-place Steelers despite being exactly .500. It hasn’t been the season Baltimore hoped for, but quarterback Lamar Jackson is playing some great football in December. If there was ever a team that could make a late season push for the top of their division, it’s this Ravens squad. Like the Patriots, they’ve also only beaten one team with a winning record (the Chicago Bears back in October). The Ravens have some momentum behind them after a 24–0 shutout of the Bengals last week. They likely will not hold Drake Maye to zero on Sunday night, but they can limit what New England can accomplish on the ground. While their pass defense has looked vulnerable this season, they can solve that by playing the way they did last week. Get to Maye, force him to make mistakes, and get the ball back into Jackson’s hands. Running Back Derrick Henry will be looking to rack up some yards against a Patriots defense that looked like it had some holes in it against Buffalo last week. There’s also the fact that the stakes are higher for Baltimore this week. They’re fighting for a spot in the playoffs at all, while the Patriots are likely to make it no matter what happens this week. That’s all the motivation this offense needs to run up the score in their final home game of the season.
