The biggest games of the NFL season are on Sunday Night Football. Every week, you can catch must-see matchups LIVE after the rest of Sunday’s action has concluded. This week, Sunday Night Football takes us to Orchard Park, NY where the New England Patriots will face the Buffalo Bills.
New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills
The Patriots (2–2, 2nd in AFC East) were on top of the football world for more than a decade, but the 2020s have been a different story. Now, rival Buffalo routinely wins the AFC East, though the Patriots are hoping to change that. They started the season slow with a 20–13 loss to the Raiders, but immediately bounced back, beating the Dolphins 33–27. They slipped again in Week 3 against the Raiders but returned to their high-scoring ways against the Panthers just last week in a 42–13 drubbing. Quarterback Drake Maye has completed 74 percent of his passes this season. He’s been spreading the ball around to multiple teammates as well, meaning he’s not reliant on one target. Although, one of those targets might be looking to do some extra damage this Sunday. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs will play his first game in Buffalo since the Bills traded him in 2024. He’s coming off a 101-yard game against the Panthers, and he’ll want to show his old team exactly what they’re missing. Over on defense, the Patriots boast one of the league’s best run defenses, perfectly tuned to give a run-heavy team like the Bills a lot of trouble. Then there’s the final piece of the puzzle: Special teams. With running back Antonio Gibson returning punts and kickoffs, New England has averaged 29.3 yards per return. The Pats have all the tools they need at their disposal. If they can get them all working in sync, they can stun their AFC East rival on Sunday night.
The Bills (4–0, 1st in AFC East), are one of two teams in the NFL who are still undefeated. They’re hoping to go 5–0 in front of the notorious Bills home crowd on Sunday Night Football. Like their opponents, they’re also coming off a big win: A 31–19 victory over the Saints. They also put up 31 points on the Dolphins the week before. And 30 points against the Jets the week before that. Then there’s their first game of the season: A narrow victory over the Ravens which ended 41–40. Even in their closest game so far this season, no one can keep this Bills team out of the endzone. Especially running back James Cook, who has 401 yards and 5 touchdowns already this season. He’ll really need to bring his A-game this weekend though against a particularly stout New England run defense. That defense might be spread a bit thin though, due to the omnipresent threat of quarterback Josh Allen. If Cook can’t find an open lane, Allen can just move the ball himself. Defending one elite running threat is hard enough. The Bills have at least two on the field for almost every play. While the offense gets most of the attention here, the defense has stepped up in crucial moments to keep the Bills ahead. They may not have the most impressive numbers in the league, but they’ve been able to get big stops when it counts. This weekend, they’ll have some help from a roaring Bills Mafia in a primetime rivalry game. With that crowd behind them, and Josh Allen being Josh Allen, the Bills can come out on top yet again this week.
