Mary Cosby shocked host Andy Cohen when she revealed a surprising anecdote from her teenage years during The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 6 reunion.

How to Watch

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on Bravo. New episodes stream next day on Peacock.

“You know, I feel like when I got kicked out…I was like, ‘Where am I gonna go?’ And my mom was like, ‘I don’t know where you’re going but you’re not living here,’” Mary recalled during Peacock’s extended and uncensored version of Part 2 of the RHOSLC reunion.

Although Mary has opened up in the past about her strained relationship with her mother, it’s the first time she’s hinted that their troubles began when she was just 18 years old.

When Andy inquired as to why Mary’s mother kicked her out of the house, she answered, “I wasn’t obeying the rules. I was one of those child[ren].”

Details on Mary Cosby's relationship with her late mother

Mary’s mother, Rosalind Cazares, died in January 2025 as Mary was filming RHOSLC Season 6. Andy offered his condolences to Mary for her loss during the Jan. 20 episode, and asked if she had “any regrets about not making amends before she passed.”

“No,” Mary answered, and explained, “We’d been estranged for 20-something years. So, I don’t even know what it’s like to have a mom.”

Mary offered hints about her falling out with her mother back in RHOSLC Season 2, explaining that a large part of it was due to Mary marrying her late grandmother Rosemary Cosby’s second husband, Robert Cosby Sr., as her mother didn’t approve of the union.

“My grandmother, in her will, she wanted me to take her place,” Mary also shared about her unusual marriage arrangement to Heather Gay during RHOSLC Season 1, and later added, “Basically my grandmother passed everything on to me, and — literally— she wanted me to also marry her second husband, which was my step-grandfather.”

Part of Mary’s marriage included stepping into her grandmother’s shoes as First Lady of the church founded by her grandmother, Faith Temple Pentecostal. When Mary’s church reopened after two years of renovations during RHOSLC Season 6, she reflected on how the church contributed to her estrangement from her mother.

“For some reason, my mom thought she was supposed to take everything over,” Mary explained during Episode 7, but added why she ended up becoming First Lady. “My grandmother told her. So, we were all clear on what my grandmother wanted. But once my grandmother passed, my mom just started trying to take over, everything. And things got bad.”

Previously during Season 2, Mary had revealed more backstory of her troubles with her mother, and shared with Heather and Whitney Rose, “My mom was my friend. I thought that was my best friend. I thought whatever I chose, she knew that I was capable of handling the right choice. I lost my mom because I knew I was right, and I wasn't backing down. She cut me off."

As Mary opened up about her mother’s passing during Season 6, Episode 7, she admitted “it hurts.”

“The fact that it’s full circle now and she’s gone? I don’t know how I feel about that,” she confessed to her cousin. “It’s like a roller coaster…but it’s also a chapter that’s closed.”

Mary also described her relationship with her mother up until her death as “a storm or battle that I had been in for all those years.” She added, “I mean, she put articles in the paper about me. Put lies out there about [me and Robert Sr.]. I mean, it was always something.”

She also admitted that when she and her mother stopped speaking, she “felt that absence,” but thought she was doing the right thing. “My mom didn’t want to speak to me, and so, I gave her what she wanted,” she said.

Mary Cosby explains how her own teenage mistakes helped her relate to her son, Robert Jr.

On Part 2 of the RHOSLC Season 6 reunion, Mary admitted she drew on her own experience being kicked out of her home as a teenager to help her parent her son, Robert Cosby Jr.

Robert Jr.’s sobriety journey was shown on RHOSLC Seasons 5 and 6, and Andy explained during the recent reunion that Robert Jr. was currently in the Salt Lake City Metro Jail due to a restraining order violation with his estranged wife.

“Is it your hope that he’ll be scared straight?” Andy asked Mary, and she bluntly answered, “Yes, of course. I hope that this is all for his own good,” and then shared how she was kicked out as a teenager.

She later added of Robert Jr.'s jailing, “I’m in a good place. I’m not worried about him. I know he’s somewhere he’s not using. She also drew parallels to her own mother’s parenting style, sharing, “At some point, I have to step back so that he can learn. And he can make his own decisions. And unfortunately, he’s learning the hard way. But I’m okay with it.”

She admitted, “You don’t want to see your kid suffer, but I know it’s good. And I’d rather he be there than dead.”
