What Is Knock at the Cabin About?

Soon after arriving at a cabin in rural Pennsylvania for a family getaway, a young girl (Kristen Cui) and her dads (Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge) hear a knock at the door. Outside are four strangers who claim to have received visions of the apocalypse… and the only way to save humankind is for one member of this particular (and very unlucky) family to be sacrificed.

Although a greeting like that would typically warrant slamming the door in the faces of these intruders, they’re armed and hold the ill-fated vacationers hostage. Each refusal to comply comes with a new global disaster, from tsunamis to earthquakes to a deadly pandemic, as proven by catastrophic reports on TV.

Adapted from the novel by Paul G. Tremblay, this story mines themes like faith, sacrifice, and the inevitability of our mortality to create claustrophobia that mirrors, well, being trapped indoors as the world crumbles outside (sound familiar?). Knock at the Cabin ultimately poses an impossible and horrific moral quandary: Is killing one person—even worse, someone you love—worth saving the lives of many?
