The biggest games of the NFL season are on Sunday Night Football. Every week, you can catch must-see matchups LIVE after the rest of Sunday’s action has concluded. This week, Sunday Night Football takes us to Santa Clara, CA where the Atlanta Falcons will face the San Francisco 49ers

Atlanta Falcons vs. San Francisco 49ers

The Falcons (3–2, 2nd in NFC South) started the season up and down, but seem to have hit a stride these last couple weeks. They opened the season with a narrow loss to the Buccaneers and followed it up with a 22–6 rout of the Vikings. Then they were scoreless in a 30–0 loss to the Panthers before back-to-back wins over the Commanders and Bills. Not only did Atlanta’s defense outscore Buffalo in that game, but the defense held Josh Allen’s offense to just 14 points. That’s not easy to do. This Falcons defense proved beyond any doubt they’re the real thing last Monday. Increasingly, this feels like a team that can beat anybody. Especially with running back Bijan Robinson hitting his stride. In his last two games alone, he’s racked up 245 rushing yards and two touchdowns. That has opened things up for Michael Penix Jr., whose quick passes are starting to pay off. Against the Bills, he threw for 250 yards, one touchdown, with no interceptions. This running back-QB combo is not to be underestimated, especially against a 49ers defense that’s been dealing with injuries. If they can stay hot, and the defense can limit San Francisco’s run game, the Falcons can end the night with a three-game winning streak.

The 49ers (4–2, 1st in NFC West) have the lead in their division, though they have the same record as two of their rivals, the Seahawks and the Rams. This weekend, they’re looking to pull ahead and solidify their place on top of the NFC West as they face a tough opponent at home. Despite this season being plagued by injuries, the 49ers have kept themselves in games and stayed ahead of their division. This team has a ton of talent at its disposal and shouldn’t be taken lightly even with some key pieces missing. Those pieces will probably include quarterback Brock Purdy, who was limited in practice this week and will likely sit out this Sunday. Backup Mac Jones was also limited, though less so, and may start instead. Jones is a great quarterback himself, and the 49ers will be in good hands with him at the helm. Especially with the hopeful return of tight end George Kittle. If Kittle plays, he’ll open up so many more options for this offense, which they’ll need if they want to get past the Falcon’s elite defense. San Francisco’s defense, meanwhile, just lost a key player in linebacker Fred Warner. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh though, is confident that this young, energetic team can make up for Warner’s absence. If this team can overcome those challenges and play like they have been for most of the season so far, they can stay on top of the West on Sunday night.
