Sunday Night Football is home to some of the most thrilling matchups of the NFL season. Every week, two of the league’s toughest teams face off in primetime on Sunday’s biggest stage. This week brings the action to Santa Clara, California where the Dallas Cowboys will take on the San Fransisco 49ers.
Dallas Cowboys vs. San Fransisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football
The Cowboys (3-1, 2nd in NFC East) have only lost one game so far this season. In every other game, they have looked immaculate. They started the season off strong with a 40–0 rout of their division rival, the New York Giants on the first Sunday Night Football game of the 2023 season. They continued picking on New York with a 30–10 victory against the Jets that never looked that close. The only hiccup came in Week 3’s 28–16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The usually unstoppable defense had an off day and allowed 400 yards against them. On offense, quarterback Dak Prescott couldn’t get the ball going downfield as efficiently as he had been and threw an interception right at the end. It was a bad day for the Cowboys, but if last week is anything to go by, that might be all it was. They shut down the New England Patriots’ offense in Week 4, winning easily 38-3. The Cowboys can play! The defense is capable of shutting down anything the 49ers try this weekend. Plus, they have former Niner Trey Lance at QB3, so they could be getting some pointers there. If the Cowboys get some explosive plays out of Dak and running back Tony Pollard, they could be leaving San Francisco with a W.
The 49ers (4-0, 1st in NFC West) will be a tough team to beat though, as evidenced by the fact that no team has done it so far this season. Not only that, the closest they’ve come to losing was in Week 2’s 30–23 victory over the Rams. It’s easy to see them going to the Super Bowl this year if everyone stays healthy. Last season’s surprise breakout star QB Brock Purdy has yet to throw an interception. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan calls dynamic, malleable plays that frustrate opposing defenses. You think they’re heading one way, and suddenly the ball is on the other end of the field, in the hands of a guy you didn’t think you had to cover. The 49ers defense is just as perplexing, switching up and combining their schemes so opposing QBs can never be sure where they should put the ball.
This will be a true test for the Cowboys on both sides of the ball. If both teams keep playing the way they have been though, we may be looking at an NFC Championship preview this Sunday night.
