When the Boston Celtics take the floor to face the Indiana Pacers on Peacock NBA Monday, the Celtics’ uniforms might take a little getting used to — after all, you won’t be seeing any green on the court.

This 2025-2026 NBA season, for the first time ever, Boston has been sporting new green-free City Edition uniforms at select games. With nary a hint of the Celtics' signature color to be found, the unis mark a major departure from Boston’s typical green-and-white colorway… all to pay tribute to the franchise’s rich and matchless history as 18-time league champions.

The story behind the Boston Celtics’ Gold and White City Edition uniforms

The Celtics have made reference before to the “gold standard” behind their legendary franchise history in past City Edition uniforms, sporting gold trim with their bespoke City threads during the 2019-2020, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024 NBA seasons. But they’re never gone completely green-free until now.

With their gold-on-white design, Boston’s new 2025-2026 City Edition unis are aimed at making the Celtics’ historic winning ways stand out, with the gold accents “representing success, achievement, and triumph,” according to NBA uniform platform LockerVision

The uniforms’ details continue that theme with the signature imprint of iconic Celtics coach Red Auerbach on the jersey. Through 16 seasons from 1950 to 1966, Auerbach coached the Celtics to a record eight consecutive NBA titles (as well as nine overall). To this day, the Celtics’ eight-straight championship run remains an NBA record that has never been challenged, with the five-season streak by the Minneapolis Lakers (before their move to Los Angeles) from 1949-1954 coming in as the closest contender.

Stitched into the back of the Celtics’ City Edition collar is another tiny detail with big historic significance: the number “18,” a nod to the franchise’s overall 18 NBA titles. As one of the 11 founding members of the NBA, the Celtics have the edge on every other NBA franchise when it comes to NBA Championships, stringing together a league-leading legacy that spans their first title in 1957 (under Auerbach) to their most recent title crowning the 2023-2024 season — when they defeated the Dallas Mavericks in a 4-1 NBA Finals series.
