Paralympics Overview

The Paralympics is a multisport event for athletes with disabilities. In the summer, you can expect to see sports like archery, judo, rowing, powerlifting, and wheelchair tennis. The winter Paralympic sports include alpine skiing, snowboarding, para ice hockey, wheelchair curling, and more.

The Paralympics have grown considerably since the inaugural 1960 games, which started six days after the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. 400 athletes from 23 nations, all in wheelchairs, competed in only eight sports, including ones we know and love today, like wheelchair basketball and para table tennis. Today, both the Summer and Winter Paralympics include 28 sports, with para badminton and para taekwondo as the newest additions in 2021.
